The main movement symptoms
Bradykinesia means slowness of movement and is central to parkinson disease. Other common movement symptoms include resting tremor, muscle rigidity, walking difficulty, and impaired balance, according to the Parkinson's Foundation's movement-symptom guidance. The pattern matters more than any isolated symptom.
The International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society defines motor parkinsonism as bradykinesia plus either resting tremor or rigidity; clinicians then consider supporting evidence, exclusions, and warning signs for other conditions in its clinical diagnostic criteria. Tremor is not required. The Parkinson's Foundation reports that only about half of people with Parkinson disease experience it, so a person may have significant slowness or stiffness without shaking.
Symptoms beyond movement

The Parkinson's Foundation's diagnostic overview explains that diagnosis remains based on medical history, reported symptoms, and a neurological examination. MRI, blood work, and specialized imaging mainly help support the assessment or exclude possible mimics. Before an appointment, make the pattern easier to evaluate:.

- Record when each change began and whether it developed gradually.

What scans and biomarkers can—and cannot—show
A positive DaTscan can support evidence of dopamine-system loss. It cannot distinguish Parkinson disease from atypical parkinsonism, however, and a negative scan may not exclude Parkinson disease early in its course. Alpha-synuclein seed-amplification assays are promising biomarkers, but their limits remain important.
They are not widely standardized, may miss some Parkinson cases, and cannot predict who will develop the disease. These assays also cannot distinguish the major synucleinopathies from one another. Test results must therefore be interpreted alongside symptoms, history, and examination rather than treated as a stand-alone answer.
What happens after assessment
There is currently no cure, but treatment can reduce symptoms and improve function. The World Health Organization identifies levodopa/carbidopa as the most effective medicine for improving symptoms, functioning, and quality of life in its Parkinson disease fact sheet. Surgery and rehabilitation can also reduce symptoms or improve function.
The relevant next step depends on the person's symptom pattern, daily limitations, and clinical assessment. For ongoing care, keep a brief record of changes in movement, sleep, mood, thinking, pain, and daily activities. Bring that record to follow-up visits so treatment discussions reflect both visible movement problems and less obvious non-motor effects.
